Unilever shuts down ‘REN’ clean skincare

In a move that has taken the beauty industry by storm, Unilever has announced that it will discontinue its UK-based clean skincare brand - REN Clean Skincare 💔, by the end of 2025.

This decision comes in response to a combination of internal challenges and an increasingly competitive market that has made long-term sustainability a difficult feat for the brand.

Unilever acquired REN back in 2015, with the hope of capitalizing on the ‘clean beauty trend’ 🌱.

In 2023, REN’s revenue hit £1.2 billion, but a dip in profits, fueled by leadership changes and a restructuring of its product line that the brand could no longer thrive in the ever-evolving skincare landscape. This, combined with tough market competition and shifting consumer preferences, ultimately led to Unilever's decision to shut down REN’s operations.

For the clean beauty market, this is more than just the closure of a beloved brand —it signals the ongoing challenges faced by larger corporations in keeping pace with consumer demands for 💡authenticity , innovation , and sustainability, since the consumers become more educated about the ingredients and functionalities of the products they buy.

REN’s closure is an important reminder for clean beauty brands:

Continuously adapt to the shifting landscape and to consider long-term viability as a key driver of success 🌟
